Christian Dell

Born: 1893 - Died: 1974
Best-known works: Kaiser Idell lamps
Training: Silversmith

Christian Dell was a German designer with an exciting background as a silversmith, a background that helps to explain the sense for find detail found in his creations. He worked as a foreman at the Bauhaus metal workshop in Weimar from 1922 to 1925, where he was responsible for an incredibly innovative and groundbreaking design style.

The Bauhaus – encompassing architecture, design, art and other media – occupies its own special place in the cultural history of the 20th century. It was one of the first educational institutions dedicated to design and was a gathering point for the period’s most exceptional artists and architects.

Starting in 1926 Dell began to design light fixtures, often for the Gebr. Kaiser & Co. lamp factory. His table lamp model 6631 Luxus was first exhibited in 1936. It quickly became the leading model in the KAISER idell™ series, which both then and now stands as a symbol of the finest in German design, elegantly enhanced with exquisite materials and precision technology.

If you’re curious about the name of the lamp program, Kaiser is the name of the original manufacturer and Idell is a combination of the word ’idea’ and Christian Dell’s surname.

The Bauhaus Movement Turns 100

Christian Dell is almost synonymous with the Bauhaus movement, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2019. Fritz Hansen have chosen to mark the occasion with a special edition of Dell’s most popular lamp, the KAISER Idell Luxus table lamp in brass
The special edition is made using a brass frame, which compliments the iconic lampshade perfectly.
With a vintage-inspired look, Christian Dell’s world-renowned design is being lifted to new heights, making it even more relevant for the modern style of décor, if such a thing is even possible.
The brass is untreated and will develop a patina in time, giving each special edition lamp a unique expression.
