Akari

The sculptural lamp appears original yet traditional. The modern light source lights up the traditional craftsmanship and highlights the lamp’s natural shape. The Akari lamps can neither be defined as functional products nor as art, instead lying somewhere in the middle. When the light shines through the delicate paper, it bathes the room in a warm and comfortable glow that lends the surroundings a sense of inviting calm. In other words, the lamps don’t just add light to the room, they bring a relaxing atmosphere to any style of interior design.

Genuine Japanese rice paper lamps with a modern twist

In 1951, the Japanese-American artist and designer began designing light sculptures that were named 'Araki', which means "light" in Japanese. Noguchi emphasized that his art should have both practical and social functions. On a trip to Japan, he visited Gifu - a city known for the manufacture of lanterns and paper umbrellas - where he drew the first sketches for the Akari light sculptures. Within the following years, he created more than 100 models of pendant, table, floor and ceiling lamps in sizes from 24 to 290 centimeters.

Ever since Isamu Noguchi first designed the Akari Light Sculptures, they have been handmade at the Ozeki workshop in Gifu, Japan. It takes about 6 hours to produce one lamp and it's all done by the best Japanese craftsmen in the business. The transverse bamboo poles are stretched into molds that determine the shape of the lamp. Then the paper is carefully glued to the wooden skeleton - one piece at a time to ensure a perfect fit. Once the glue has dried, the mold is removed and the shade can now be folded and shipped or stored in flat boxes.

Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi began designing light sculptures in 1951. He created more than 100 handmade Shoji paper models that included table lamps, floor lamps and floor lamps. The series was named 'Araki', which means 'light' in Japanese. Today, the entire range consists of more than 40 different lights that combine Japanese and Scandinavian design with a timeless and minimalist expression.

The lights come in different sizes and shapes - some in their pure form and others with graphic illustrations. Common to the Akari lamps is the robust material Shoji paper, which dims the light and hides the light source while allowing a pleasant and even light to spread throughout the environment.
