Flos

Flos was founded by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassino in 1962 in the Italian town of Merano. The company still manufactures some of its original, classic models. Its main location is in Bovezzo, Italy. Flos manufactures a range of standing, table, mounted, pendulum, and outdoor lamps for private as well as commercial use.

From the very beginning, Flos has been known for its high-quality approach to lamp manufacturing, design, and production processes. Many of their lamps designed specifically for commercial use are some of the most famous and successful products on the industrial design market—and the company has Achille Castiglioni and his brother Piergiacomo Castiglioni to thank for that.

More about Flos and its lamps

Flos has won a range of prizes and is internationally recognised for its designs. Flos lamps are on display in design museums around the world.

In the 1980s, talented up-and-coming designers flocked to Flos. In 1988, Flos started its partnership with Philippe Starck.

This partnership has led to a series of successes and Philippe Starck still works with the company to design and develop new products, including the Ara lamp, the Romeo Moon series, and the Cicatrice de Luxe chandelier. In the 1990s, Flos manufactured the Rosy Angelis, Romeo Moon, and Archimoon collections, all designed by Philippe Starck.

Other talented designers the company has worked with include Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson, Antonio Citterio, Marcello Ziliani, Marcel Wanders, Piero Lissoni, Rodolfo Dordoni, Joris Laarman, Knud Holscher, Johanna Grawunder, and Patricia Urquiola.

Throughout the 1990s, Flos released a range of products from new designers. This reflected Flos’ desire to unearth talented designers in order to stay ahead of the market. In partnership with Jasper Morrison, Flos began to manufacture its Glo-ball lamps in 1998.

The elegant and expressive IC lamp is one of Flos’ great successes from the 2010s. The lamp was designed by Michael Anastassiades, who started working with Flos in 2014. The inspiration for the lovely and daring IC lamps was a video of a juggler, who was balancing balls on their arms and legs. The designer has recreated the magical moment where the juggler balances the ball perfectly on their fingertip, reimagined as a spherical lampshade balancing perfectly on a slender frame.

Flos lamps are characterised by their adaptability and gorgeous details, including hand-blown glass shades and elegant shadow effects. Flos lamps are more than just lighting—they are art.

The Bouroullec brothers, Ronan and Erwan, started collaborating in the late 90s. They had their breakthrough in the late 00s, when they designed the popular Aim Lampe for Flos. The brothers are famous for their experimental approach to design, which is reflected in the Aim Pendant. The simple lamp is based on the concept of step-free adjustment to the height of the light. Together, the minimalist lampshade and loose cable provide flexibility and serve as a sculptural, decorative object in your décor.

The Flos philosophy is that lamps should be provocative and forward-thinking without compromising the basic and fundamental principles of lighting. This vision has led to a range of iconic lamps that have helped change the way we think about lighting.

Finally, most Flos lamps are highly functional lamps offering more than the standard 40-60W, which means that they are capable of providing more than just cosy lighting. This is an important and highly sought-after quality in commercial as well as private spaces.
