A timeless design classic: the Lampe Gras 215 floor lamp

The Lampe Gras 215 floor lamp combines Bernard-Albin Gras’s iconic design language with a striking combination of materials. Its origins date back to 1922, when Gras developed the first designs for a series of lights originally intended for offices and industrial applications.

The series epitomises an exceptionally well-thought-out interplay of functionality, robustness and ergonomics. The basic construction was developed without screws or welded seams. Details such as the body, lampshade, fittings and joints follow a clear design language that has been carefully considered down to the last detail.

Le Corbusier was impressed by the modern design of Lamp Gras lights from an early stage and incorporated them into his projects. To this day, the models are regarded worldwide as sought-after design classics and collectors’ items. Bernard-Albin Gras’s visionary design has retained its timeless appeal.

A distinctive feature of the raw copper lampshade is that the lampshade is initially supplied bare and untreated. The natural patina only begins to form after unpacking, through contact with air and moisture. As a result, the surface changes over time and develops its own unique, characteristic copper look.

The rate of oxidation depends, amongst other things, on humidity, temperature and the environment, and therefore cannot be predicted exactly. The first signs of darkening may become visible after around 14 days. If you wish the patina to develop more quickly, the lampshade can be stored outdoors in the shade for a few days, ensuring it is protected.
