Muuto – 20 years of new perspectives

Scandinavian design is not an aesthetic. It is a mindset.

For over a hundred years, generations of designers have returned to the same values: honest forms, a function that derives from everyday life, and a deep respect for material, craftsmanship, and durability.

On this foundation, Muuto was founded twenty years ago in Copenhagen – with the intention not to repeat this attitude, but to carry it forward. The name is derived from the Finnish muutos: new perspective. The past is not something to copy, but something to build upon.

At the heart is the conviction that design is created with heart and mind. Some things need to be felt – the weight of a material, the softness of an edge, the atmosphere of a room. Others can be measured: proportion, ergonomics, construction, durability. It is this exact balance that lights like Ambit from TAF Studio, Unfold from Form Us With Love, or Under the Bell (see image) from Iskos-Berlin embody. The same attitude is found in the accessories – vases, bowls, baskets, and textiles that give a room warmth and character without overwhelming it.

On the anniversary, Muuto is asking less where the brand comes from and more about what comes next. In an increasingly digital world, this means creating real, physical experiences that invite presence, calmness, and genuine closeness.

Twenty years. And still curious.
